[Advice] In what ways does an SEO strategy differ between a typical content site and a site that has a local offering?

Hey guys, just answered a question over on Quora

This question was asked:

"A site with a local offering might be a business that operates in specific markets vs a typical content site available nationally (relevant to any market)."

Local is more targeted towards the location they are in. This can make seo both easier and harder.

It can be easier because the competition for "dallas auto repair" will be much smaller than "auto repair". You also have the advantage of using local directories and Local google + (formerly Google Places).

Because of the low competition, it usually takes less effort to get decent rankings.

At times it can be more work if the business has a wide service area. Trying to get ranked for multiple cities is many times harder than ranking for a non local term. 4 cities equals 4 times the work.

But the basic difference is just targeting the local city. But you do have a lot of tolls to do so.

Hope that helps,
