Your site needs to be properly optimized for the terms that your market would search. There are factors that will help your site rank better, these include on page and off page methods.
I am not sure what you mean about an IT company making money from it unless you are talking about an IT company having SEO done for their site. In that case, they make money by getting more customers when their site is properly ranked for the terms they need.How is it done? There are full books on this. Not something that can be answered quickly. But there is a right way and a wrong way. The wrong way can hurt you bad in the long run, even if it has short term gains.Hope that helps,- JR
